It is your turn – providing you really listen to what you are playing - I am sure, for once, you will not be disappointed. Here is a piece which has a genuine sound to it : sincere, touching, not sad, it has been composed for you, with humour and love... Thank you, Olivier, for this real and lasting contribution to our repetoire.!

Au pays du Roi Musique
(guitar)

score : Au pays du Roi Musique
(Volume 2 has a similar cover but is in green) .

This work, published in 1988, consists of two volumes. It has often been an obligatory work for exams and FFEM (this means obligatory for all music schools in the country). This collection remains, even after several years, an undeniable success, according to guitar students.

In the land of the Music King is a small imaginary world which, in two volumes, lends itself to guitar beginners as well as those who have already made a start with the guitar as a double initiation : technical and instumental, musical and poetical in a broad sense. Methods integrating basic rhythm theory with mnemotechique exercises for guitarists (arpeggio, short rhythemic units of repetion, the use of open strings and fingering positions first and foremost, etc) allowing a rapid mastering of fingering and musical problems all resolved with the pleasure of interpretation. Furthermore, since the imagination is the real source of any interpretation, works such as "The gracious queen, mill stories, jugglery..." will be like many images which will guide young musicians in this sensitive path. "Synthesizing and poetry making" seem to be the two important factors to be united.

Bossa Cristina

[see thematic trail]

Published in 2008 with a compact disc and dedicated to Christian Chanel, professor at the CNR of Versailles, these 16 pieces which can be tackled at the end of the first cycle are presented here to us with the dedication : ...O Mayran de Chamisso broadens his quest... not only across countries, but also across styles and eras, from Baroque to disco, from impressionism to the Polish mazurka, passing by rock, rai (north African Arab music) and flamenco… This time, beyond the fineness, the delicacy and the rhythmic life to which Olivier has accustomed us, we are in the presence of genuine little pearls, authentic little paintings which are remarkably structured and balanced, which is so important in such a delicate exercise said to be "educational". The truth of the climate and style, the quality and the accuracy of evocation confer on this album a place of choice, even unavoidable, in this repertoire for the young and the less-young guitarists.

Moscovite evening

Published in 2005 and presented with a compact disc, this volume is dedicated to Christian Chanel, professor at the CNR in Versailles, who says to us : ...O Mayran de Chamisso has a very high idea, nourished by a long experience, of the commitment which makes the teaching of beginners such a hopeful experience... Yes it is a real commitment which he shows us once again ; after the success of the "Livres d'images" ("Pictures books"), he now offers us, in all sincerity, the humour and the poetry which we know him for, 16 little paintings of his invention which lead us to ‘discovery’ around the world... Sixteen original evocations, which are elegant, well-balanced, which you will love learning, practicing, playing, repeating... In short, once again, an enduring and definite addition to such a delicate repertoire which are the first years

Trois petites valses récréatives et délicieusement précieuses
(guitar)

score : Trois petites valses récréatives et délicieusement précieuses

3rd waltz for amusement

[see thematic trail]

The publication of these works dates from 2005. These very short waltzes can be linked to the pieces graciously embellished with images which Robert Schumann composed and united with the title "Carnaval opus 9", but with a definitely French leaning, expressing here the delicacy and the precosity of the salons of the end of the XIX century, somewhat in the style of Erik Satie.

12 préludes intemporels

partition : 12 préludes intemporels

Waterfall

These 12 timeless preludes are certainly one of the masterpieces of the author. They belong to the family of the romantic preludes, searching for the aestheticism of pure and harmonious shape. Expressing in a short piece a whole climate, a whole atmosphere is the key in these sensitive preludes, exaltating the playing and revealing a true musicality! This volume, aimed both at students and professional players, will seduce not only the player, but also the audience!

10 negro spirituals
(guitare)

score : 10 negro spirituals

The author proposes here transcriptions and arrangements of existing negro spirituals. These works are presented with their original texts (which allow direct vocal accompaniment with the guitar). In each negro spiritual, the author wanted to create an original variation, thus giving a vertical and personal touch to these works, which are so moving and expressive : a transcription of faith,of life, of suffering and hopes of all an oppressed people. The guitar, with its sensitivity and the richness of its pitch, lends itself particularly well to these sung works which were published in 1994.

Vagabondages et confidences
(guitar)

partition : Vagabondages et confidences

Published in 2000, this suite of 6 pieces in E flat is dedicated to François Dry, musical critic of the Cahiers de la guitare. He says the following : It is with much pleasure that I accepted to write the preface of the works of Olivier Mayran de Chamisso. Classical but very fresh, these works are reminiscent of our childhood ballads, and by their inspiration demonstrate that in spite of everything else, the hope of a happy world, clear and lucid, prevails. Maybe it is up to us to try and create this imaginary world... Without being difficult, this suite of pieces will make you work one by one, speed, the links and the independence of fingering , the accompanying melody, the most complex counterpoint, the fast movement and the use of high frets...

8 valses péruviennes
(guitar)

partition : Huit valses péruviennes

8th Peruvian Waltz

These pieces published in 1992, were conceived by the author as waltzes for concerts, in the most traditional South American folklore (Peruvian in colour). This captivating music emits an ardour and undeniable poetry, in the spirit of the famous predecessors such as Barrios, Lauro or Borgès nevertheless with the big difference : the author has assimilated the musical culture of South America and has transcribed it using his own European culture as a base, particularly French, whereas the South Americans had proceeded in the opposite direction, and this is the originality of these 8 Peruvian waltzes, which the author has dedicated to his son Fabrice.

Chants de l'aube au crépuscule
4 tremolos for guitar

score : Chants de l'aube au crépuscule

When the dusk gently falls

[see thematic trail]

Published in 2006, these works refer to the well-known "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by F.Tarrega. The author wanted to create an original cycle of four tremolos (of concert level), using the path of the sun, the source of all life, as an excuse. Each guitarist can choose his own tremolo as an encore, for example, while more experienced players can completely link them together during a concert. May you be able, dear friendly reader, to grasp the deep melodious and poetical vibration of these works which came to the author in a moment of great exultation!

Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum
(guitar)

score : Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum

Here is an extract from a transcription of Children’s Corner for Piano by Debussy, published in 2003. Alain Le Bellec, , while professor at the Conservatoire de Fontainebleau (music school of the city of Fontainebleau), said : ...The guitarist gathers pollen from this smiling ‘clemetis’ (which is an allusion to Clementi, the first inventor of the title) will discover a black and a white petal in filigram : his own Doctor Gradus... O Mayran de Chamisso loves Debussy’s music. He has already insisted on that, in one of his guitar works « Prelude to the memory of Debussy ». With the first movement of Children’s Corner, he offers us the kaleidoscopic transcription. All of the notes are present ; it is the light which changes. Since in 1920 Manuel de Falla opened the door of Debussy's garden to young guitarists guitars inebriate themselves in quarts of these fragrances. Thank Olivier for having watered a flower for us

Oriental danza espanola n°2
(guitar)

score : Oriental danza espanola n°2

Published in 2005, this transcription of a Spanish dance from Granados for piano has the particularity of maintaining the height of the original register : the theme is played both in high-pitch and picked up again a second time in the low-pitch, the use of harmonic notes allows to play the counterpoint in its integrality. The respect of the original text was the major preoccupation in this adaptation.

Sonate expressionniste
(guitar)

score : Sonate expressionniste

Expressionist sonata 1st movement

[see thematic trail]

This sonata, published in 1992 (commissioned for the Ile de France exam), is characteristic of the French impressionist music ; lightness, fluidity and construction prove the fact. It is also a marked tribute to the death of the author’s father :

I dedicate this sonato to François, my father. He listened to it for the first time shortly before he left us and he had such a large smile of approval that I will never forget his expression.

Rêveries en duo
(two guitars)

score : Rêveries en duo

These 6 pieces for 2 guitars are a true poetical dialog, with an equal role for the two instruments. Of progressive level, these "daydreams" take us to a world of melodic and rythmic fascination, where ears can relax with rich and spellbinding tones coming with the fused 12 strings, like in a small orchestra.

Trois abeilles pour ma ruche
(flute - guitar - cello)

score : Trois abeilles pour ma ruche

Three bees for my hive

This simple and lilting trio, published in 1994, in three movements, remains a example of style by the equal distribution of the melody and the accompaniment for each instrument, thereby perfectly corresponding to the definition of "chamber music". This heartfelt work continues its progression, by word of mouth in the musical world : music schools and individuals who want to have a moment of pleasure, various formations etc.
